KYIV — Russia launched one of the largest aerial assaults of the ongoing war overnight into Tuesday, firing 73 missiles and 656 drones at Ukrainian cities, with Kyiv as the primary target. Ukrainian officials report at least 17–20 civilians killed, more than 100 wounded, and significant damage to residential buildings, including a partially collapsed apartment block.
Ukraine’s Air Force said it intercepted or suppressed 40 missiles and 602 drones, but debris and direct hits still caused widespread destruction across Kyiv, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Poltava, and Zaporizhzhia. Explosions echoed through the night, triggering air raid sirens for hours.
Key Details of the Attack
Kyiv: At least 4–6 killed and 50–79 injured, including children. A residential high-rise was heavily damaged, with rescue workers searching for people trapped under rubble. Fires broke out in multiple districts.
Dnipro: Heavy casualties reported, with up to 9–11 killed (including a child) and dozens wounded. Cluster munitions or debris reportedly struck apartment areas.
Other regions: Additional deaths and injuries in Kharkiv and surrounding areas. Emergency services continue recovery operations, with fears the toll could rise as searches continue.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the strikes as “horrific” and a deliberate message from Russia that attacks will continue without stronger air defenses. He issued an urgent appeal for U.S. assistance, specifically calling for more Patriot PAC-3 missiles and European support for anti-ballistic systems.
“If Ukraine is not protected from ballistic and other missile strikes, these attacks will continue... We urgently need help from the United States in supplying missiles for the Patriot systems.” — President Zelenskyy
Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed the strikes targeted military sites in retaliation for recent Ukrainian actions, including alleged drone attacks on Russian-held territory. Ukraine and Western officials maintain the barrage primarily hit civilian areas.
This attack follows days of Ukrainian intelligence warnings about an impending large-scale Russian assault. It comes amid stalled peace talks and ongoing global tensions, including U.S. involvement in other conflicts that have strained air defense supplies. Zelenskyy has repeatedly urged partners to accelerate weapons deliveries, particularly interceptors for Patriot systems.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with international condemnation expected to follow. No immediate comment from the White House or Trump administration on the latest appeal.
