GOODYEAR, Ariz. — Two individuals suspected of shoplifting are in critical condition after jumping off a bridge on Interstate 10 in Goodyear, Arizona, on Sunday night, according to local authorities. The dramatic incident unfolded during a police pursuit, leading to significant traffic disruptions and an ongoing investigation.
The Goodyear Police Department reported that officers were dispatched to the area near Dysart and McDowell roads around 5:30 p.m. on June 1, 2025, following reports of shoplifting. A caller provided a description of the suspect vehicle, which was still in the parking lot when police arrived. Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle failed to yield, initiating a chase that ended on I-10 near Dysart Road.
According to Goodyear Police Sgt. Mayra Reeson, a man and a woman exited the vehicle and, in an apparent attempt to evade arrest, jumped off the highway bridge. Both suspects sustained serious injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they remain in critical condition. Their identities have not been released, and details about the alleged shoplifting incident, including the business targeted and items stolen, have not yet been disclosed.
Three additional individuals inside the vehicle were detained by police at the scene. The Arizona Department of Transportation reported that the incident caused evening delays, with the right lanes and on-ramp of eastbound I-10 at Dysart Road closed due to the law enforcement situation. The closure began around 6:10 p.m. and impacted traffic for over a mile, authorities said.
The Goodyear Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances leading up to the incident, including the initial shoplifting report and the events that prompted the suspects to jump. No estimated time for the reopening of the affected lanes was provided as of Sunday night.
