PHOENIX — Authorities in Phoenix are investigating a homicide after the body of a 24-year-old woman was found wrapped in material along a busy west-side roadway late Friday night.
Phoenix Police officers responded to reports of a suspicious object on the side of West Broadway Road near 55th or 59th Avenue around 10:49 p.m. on February 6. Witnesses had called in concerns about what appeared to be human remains off the roadway. Upon arrival, officers discovered the object heavily wrapped in various materials, prompting them to secure the scene and summon homicide detectives and the Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner.
The investigation quickly shifted to a homicide case as evidence confirmed the remains were human. The medical examiner's office later positively identified the victim as 24-year-old Jioenise Summerfield. Police announced the identification on Sunday, February 8.
Details surrounding Summerfield's death remain limited at this early stage. The cause of death has not been publicly released, and no information has been provided about potential suspects, motives, or circumstances leading to the incident. The discovery temporarily closed portions of Broadway Road as investigators processed the scene into Saturday morning.
Phoenix Police have urged anyone with information about the case to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously through the department's Silent Witness program or by contacting detectives directly.
The investigation remains active and ongoing, with authorities working to determine what led to Summerfield's tragic death in the west Phoenix community. Updates are expected as more details emerge.
