DHS Monitors Terrorist Attack in Boulder, Colorado, Collaborates with FBI and Interagency Partners

BOULDER, CO — June 1, 2025, 4:22 PM PDT — The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is actively monitoring a terrorist attack that unfolded earlier today in Boulder, Colorado, at the Pearl Street Mall, leaving several people injured, some with serious burn wounds. A male suspect is in custody, and the incident is under intense scrutiny by federal and local authorities.

DHS officials confirmed they are working closely with interagency partners, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (@FBI), to assess the situation and ensure a coordinated response. "We are monitoring the terrorist attack in Boulder, Colorado," a DHS spokesperson stated. "We are collaborating with our interagency partners, including the FBI, and will share more information as soon as it becomes available."

The attack occurred around 1:26 PM PDT near the intersection of 13th and Pearl Streets, a bustling pedestrian area popular with tourists and locals alike. Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn reported that officers responded to calls of a man wielding a weapon and "setting people on fire." Upon arrival, police encountered multiple victims with injuries consistent with burns and other wounds. The suspect was apprehended without incident and was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The FBI, led by Director Kash Patel, has classified the incident as a "targeted terror attack." In a social media post, Patel stated, "We are aware of and fully investigating a targeted terror attack in Boulder, Colorado. Our agents and local law enforcement are on the scene already, and we will share updates as more information becomes available." FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino echoed this, adding, "We are investigating this incident as an act of terror, and targeted violence. All of the necessary assets will be dedicated to this investigation."

The attack took place during a "Run for Their Lives" event, a weekly gathering organized by Boulder’s Jewish community to raise awareness for Israeli hostages held in Gaza. Reports indicate the suspect threw Molotov cocktails—bottles containing flammable liquid that exploded on impact—at participants, injuring at least five people, including an elderly woman whose clothes caught fire. Injuries range from minor to life-threatening, with several victims airlifted to hospitals for urgent care.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis condemned the violence, calling it a "heinous act of terror" in a statement on social media. "Hate-filled acts of any kind are unacceptable. While details emerge, the state works with local and federal law enforcement to support this investigation," he wrote. Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser also weighed in, stating, "From what we know, this attack appears to be a hate crime given the group that was targeted. People may have differing views about world events and the Israeli-Hamas conflict, but violence is never the answer to settling differences. Hate has no place in Colorado."

Boulder Police Chief Redfearn, however, cautioned against premature conclusions, noting it is "way too early" to speculate on the motive. "It would be irresponsible for me to call it a targeted terror attack at this moment," he told reporters during a press conference. The scene remains closed off, with businesses and streets between Broadway, Pine, 16th, and Walnut evacuated as authorities investigate a "vehicle of interest" and interview witnesses.

The Jewish community in Boulder expressed heartbreak in a joint statement: "We are saddened and heartbroken to learn that an incendiary device was thrown at walkers at the Run for Their Lives walk on Pearl Street as they were raising awareness for the hostages still held in Gaza. Our hearts go out to those who witnessed this horrible attack, and prayers for a speedy recovery to those who were injured."

DHS, the FBI, and local law enforcement continue to investigate, with a focus on determining the motive and circumstances of the attack. The public is urged to avoid the area and provide any relevant tips to the FBI. More updates will follow as the situation develops.
