IOWA CITY, Iowa — Five people were shot and wounded early Sunday morning in a chaotic incident on a popular pedestrian mall in downtown Iowa City, authorities said, after a large fight erupted near the University of Iowa campus.
The shooting occurred around 1:46 a.m. on April 19, 2026, in the 100 block of East College Street, a nightlife district lined with bars and restaurants close to the university. Iowa City police responded to reports of a massive brawl on the pedestrian mall when officers heard gunfire, according to multiple reports. Video footage circulating on social media appeared to show groups fighting, with punches and kicks exchanged before bystanders fled the scene as shots rang out.
Three of the victims were University of Iowa students, university officials confirmed. One person remained in critical condition Sunday, while the other four were listed in stable condition. No fatalities were reported.
University President Barbara Wilson issued a statement expressing concern for the injured students and the broader campus community. “Our hearts are burdened today after three University of Iowa students were injured during a shooting in downtown Iowa City,” Wilson said. She urged students to support one another and directed those needing assistance to university counseling and crisis resources.
Iowa City police have not made any arrests and described the investigation as ongoing. Authorities released photos of five “persons of interest” associated with the incident and asked for the public’s help in identifying them. There is no known ongoing threat to the public, police said.
Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds offered prayers for the victims and their families, stating that the full resources of the state, including the Department of Public Safety, are available to assist local law enforcement. The Board of Regents also expressed support for the university.
The University of Iowa, with approximately 31,000 students, issued Hawk Alerts advising people to avoid the area initially. Officials noted there were no indications that the students were targeted specifically.
This incident marks another instance of gun violence erupting amid a large gathering in a college town nightlife area. Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the fight and the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to contact Iowa City police.
