BALTIMORE — Three contract workers were seriously injured Tuesday afternoon in an explosion at the Patapsco Wastewater Treatment Plant in South Baltimore. The blast occurred just after 1 p.m. in the 3500 block of Asiatic Avenue while the workers were performing electrical work to expand the plant’s electrical capacity.
Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace confirmed at a news conference that two of the Department of Public Works contractors were in critical condition and the third was in serious condition. All three were transported to area hospitals. No other injuries were reported, and no plant employees or members of the public were affected.
The explosion appears to have involved a high-energy event — possibly a power arc or a blown fuse — on the side of the facility where the electrical upgrade work was underway. Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) crews responded at the request of the fire department but confirmed their equipment was not involved. The cause remains under active investigation; officials said crews must first de-energize the area and ensure it is safe before a full probe can continue.
City Public Works Director Matthew Garbark stated that the incident will not disrupt wastewater or water treatment operations. Backup generators are already online, additional units are being brought in, and chlorination remains fully functional. The plant, which processes wastewater for roughly 450,000 residents and removes pollutants before discharge into the Patapsco River, continues to operate normally.
The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) has been notified and sent inspectors to the scene. No immediate environmental hazards or hazardous materials releases have been reported.
Latest Updates (as of late June 9, 2026):
The three injured contractors remain hospitalized; no further updates on their conditions have been released.
Fire investigators, along with BGE and city officials, are continuing to examine the electrical work site.
Plant operations are stable with backup power systems in place; there is no impact on city wastewater treatment.
No evacuations were ordered beyond the immediate work area, and the broader industrial zone was not affected.
Officials emphasized that this was an isolated incident involving contractors and did not involve Synagro or biosolids processing (a contrast to past incidents at other city plants).
The Patapsco Wastewater Treatment Plant is one of Baltimore’s two major facilities (along with Back River) and has faced past scrutiny over operations and maintenance. City officials say this event is unrelated to those historical issues.
