Columbia reportedly expels encampment leader who said 'Zionists don't deserve to live'

A prominent figure in the anti-Israel protest movement at Columbia University, who has been identified as a ringleader of the campus's recent encampment, is now facing backlash after a video resurfaced, showing the individual expressing extreme views against Zionists. The student, who uses "he/she/they" pronouns, was recorded stating, "Zionists don’t deserve to live" during a disciplinary hearing with university officials in January. This alarming statement has ignited widespread criticism and condemnation from various quarters.

The footage in question was first reported by the Daily Wire and has since been widely circulated on social media platforms. In the video, the student, identified as a spokesperson for Columbia's anti-Israel student group Apartheid Divest, can be seen making the offensive remarks as university officials were questioning them about a past Instagram post. This post had warned any Zionist wanting to “meet up and fight” that they “fight to kill.”

The student's incendiary comments have led to their ban from the campus. The university administration took swift action, citing the student's behavior as a clear violation of the institution's values and policies. The decision to ban the student was made public just hours before they were set to participate in a rally-style speech within the encampment zone on campus.

In response to the backlash and the subsequent ban, the student issued a half-hearted apology, claiming that they were a victim of racism and that they had been feeling unusually upset after being targeted online for being visibly queer and Black. This apology has been met with skepticism, as many argue that it fails to adequately address the gravity of their previous statements.

The incident has further intensified the ongoing debate over the role of universities in addressing controversial and divisive issues. It has also raised questions about the limits of free speech and the responsibilities of institutions to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all students. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the university will navigate these complex issues and what long-term implications this incident will have on the campus climate at Columbia and beyond.
