Border Patrol Operation Checkmate: 52 Illegal Immigrants Arrested in Arizona – 36 Semi-Truck Drivers Nabbed

Yuma Sector Enforcement Targets Illegal Aliens Operating Big Rigs on U.S. Highways

Yuma, Ariz. — June 3, 2026 — U.S. Border Patrol agents in the Yuma Sector arrested 52 individuals unlawfully present in the United States during a targeted five-day immigration enforcement operation called “Operation Checkmate,” conducted from May 11-15. Of those arrested, 36 were actively driving commercial semi-trucks, highlighting ongoing concerns about unqualified and undocumented operators on American roads.

The operation focused on enhancing public safety by detecting and removing illegal aliens operating commercial motor vehicles, particularly in a high-traffic border region. Acting Chief Patrol Agent Dustin W. Caudle emphasized the risks posed by such drivers: “Operation Checkmate reflects our commitment to safeguarding communities and roads from unlawfully present drivers who pose significant risks to public safety. My agents are on patrol every day to ensure we stop these individuals and prevent more deadly crashes.”

Key Details from the Operation:

  • Arrest Breakdown: 36 of the 52 arrests involved semi-truck drivers. Twenty-nine possessed commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) issued by states including California, New York, Washington, and Virginia. Three had no driver’s license at all.

  • Nationalities: Approximately 30 of the arrested truck drivers were Indian nationals. The remaining individuals included nationals from Mexico, El Salvador, and Russia.

  • Documentation Issues: Most subjects held Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) obtained during the prior administration that are no longer valid. They were processed under federal immigration law and face deportation proceedings.

This action aligns with broader Trump administration efforts to restore integrity to commercial licensing. It follows a new Department of Transportation final rule aimed at preventing unqualified foreign nationals from obtaining non-domiciled CDLs for trucks and buses. Border Patrol is coordinating with federal partners to enforce these measures and eliminate incentives for illegal immigration tied to high-paying trucking jobs.

The Yuma Sector has seen similar enforcement in recent months, including the February arrest of 11 Indian national semi-truck drivers found illegally present with CDLs from multiple states. Officials stress that these operations protect both highway safety and American jobs in the transportation sector.

No injuries or incidents were reported during the arrests, and the operation concluded without major disruptions to legitimate commerce. As of June 3, all individuals remain in custody pending removal proceedings. This remains part of intensified border and interior enforcement priorities. 17GEN4 News will continue monitoring for any related developments or additional operations.
