PHOENIX, AZ — Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs has formally requested nearly $760 million from the federal government to reimburse the state for border security expenses incurred since January 2021, according to a letter sent to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Monday, August 4, 2025.

In the letter, Governor Hobbs outlined the significant financial burden Arizona has shouldered over the past four years to address border security challenges. The funds, she detailed, have been allocated to various measures, including enhanced law enforcement operations, border infrastructure improvements, and support for local communities impacted by border-related activities.

“Arizona has stepped up to address critical needs along our border, but these efforts have come at a substantial cost to our taxpayers,” Hobbs wrote. “It is imperative that the federal government fulfill its responsibility to support states bearing the brunt of these expenses.”

The request comes amid ongoing debates over federal and state roles in managing border security, with Arizona officials repeatedly highlighting the strain on state resources. Hobbs emphasized that the reimbursement would help alleviate budgetary pressures and allow the state to redirect funds to other pressing needs, such as education and infrastructure.

The Department of Homeland Security has not yet responded to the request, and it remains unclear how the federal government will address Arizona’s appeal. Political analysts anticipate that the issue could spark further discussions in Washington about border policy and funding allocations.

This latest move by Governor Hobbs underscores Arizona’s pivotal role in the national conversation on border security and the financial challenges faced by border states. As the state awaits a response, officials and residents alike are watching closely to see how the federal government will address this significant reimbursement request.
