Suspect Dies in Trooper Shooting; High-Speed Chase Ends in Mesa Crash | Arizona DPS Update

Phoenix/Mesa, Arizona — June 25, 2026

Authorities are investigating a pair of separate but notable incidents involving Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers in the East Valley, including a trooper-involved shooting where a suspect died and a high-speed pursuit that ended in a crash in Mesa. Details are still emerging as investigations continue, with no immediate threat to the public reported in either case.

In one incident, a suspect died following a shooting involving a DPS trooper. Specific details such as the exact location, timeline, and circumstances (including any connection to a pursuit or crash) are under review by DPS and local authorities. Troopers and investigators are working to determine the sequence of events, and the incident is being treated as an officer-involved shooting. No trooper injuries have been reported in available updates. Such cases typically trigger standard protocols, including body camera review, witness interviews, and potential involvement of outside agencies for independent investigation.

Separately, on or around June 22, 2026, a high-speed chase initiated by DPS troopers on U.S. 60 in Tempe ended in a crash in Mesa. According to DPS, a trooper attempted to stop 54-year-old Edward Zamora of Phoenix for speeding (initially around 110 mph). Zamora refused to pull over and led troopers on a pursuit through Tempe and into Mesa, reaching speeds as high as 121 mph while allegedly driving erratically and nearly striking other vehicles. The chase concluded when Zamora crashed his vehicle in Mesa. Zamora, who smelled of alcohol at the scene, had an open container of alcohol in the vehicle. He was taken into custody without further incident. He faces multiple charges, including unlawful flight from a law enforcement vehicle, endangerment, driving under the influence (DUI), reckless driving, and criminal speeding. A judge set his bond at $10,000.No injuries to troopers, other motorists, or pedestrians were reported in the chase. The incident highlights ongoing efforts by DPS Highway Patrol to address dangerous driving on major routes like U.S. 60 and Loop 202 corridors in the Phoenix metro area.
