Caracas, Venezuela – June 25, 2026

The death toll from two powerful back-to-back earthquakes that struck Venezuela late Wednesday has climbed to at least 188 confirmed fatalities, with more than 1,520 people injured and at least 200 still trapped beneath rubble, according to the latest statements from Venezuelan officials.

Acting President Delcy Rodríguez and National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez confirmed the updated figures Thursday evening, warning that the numbers are expected to rise significantly as search-and-rescue operations continue in the hardest-hit areas of Caracas, La Guaira state, Yaracuy, and surrounding regions.

Twin Quakes Devastate Northern and Central Venezuela

The disasters began around 6:04 p.m. local time (VET) on June 24 when a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck first, followed just 39 seconds later by a stronger 7.5 mainshock. Both were shallow strike-slip events centered in the Yaracuy region (near San Felipe and west of Morón), according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The quakes were among the strongest to hit Venezuela in over a century and were felt across much of northern and central Venezuela, with reports extending into parts of Colombia and Brazil. Dozens of buildings collapsed or suffered severe damage, particularly in densely populated areas of Caracas and the coastal state of La Guaira, which officials described as a “disaster zone.”

At least 250 buildings were damaged or destroyed. Infrastructure impacts included damage to Simón Bolívar International Airport (forcing its closure), widespread power outages, disrupted cell service, and halted public transportation. Approximately 30 aftershocks have been recorded since the main events.

Rescue Efforts Intensify as Missing Persons Reports Surge

Rescue teams, volunteers, and heavy machinery are working around the clock to pull survivors from collapsed structures. Officials have appealed to businesses to provide construction equipment to speed up operations.A crowd-sourced website tracking missing persons (shared by opposition leaders) listed more than 35,000 people as unaccounted for as of Thursday afternoon, though authorities have not independently verified this figure.

USGS predictive modeling estimates the final death toll could reach thousands, with a substantial probability of exceeding 10,000 in worst-case scenarios.Acting President Rodríguez declared a state of emergency and urged calm and national unity in a televised address. She called on health professionals to report to hospitals and designated schools as shelters and donation centers.

International Aid Flows InOffers of assistance have poured in from around the world:

  • The United States is immediately deploying search-and-rescue teams, medical resources, and humanitarian aid, according to Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

  • The United Nations is rapidly deploying specialized rescue teams and aid.

  • Switzerland is sending 80 rescue workers, eight search dogs, and 18 tonnes of equipment.

  • France has committed 85 specialist rescuers.

  • Other nations including Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Qatar, Spain, Germany, and the Netherlands have pledged rescue personnel, medical supplies, or financial aid.

UN-coordinated teams and certified international search-and-rescue units are already en route or arriving to support local efforts.

Context and Ongoing Challenges

The earthquakes come at a challenging time for Venezuela, adding to existing political and economic pressures. La Guaira state, home to the main port and airport serving Caracas, has been particularly devastated.Residents have shared harrowing accounts of buildings shaking violently, walls collapsing, and dust clouds filling streets. One survivor compared the intensity to anything experienced in previous quakes, including the notable 1967 event.Authorities continue to monitor aftershocks and coordinate relief distribution. The coming days will be critical as teams work to free those still trapped and assess the full scale of destruction.
