GARDEN GROVE, California — Tens of thousands of residents across six Orange County cities remained under mandatory evacuation orders Saturday as emergency crews continue to battle a critical chemical leak at a GKN Aerospace facility, where a massive storage tank has become unstable and could either rupture or explode.
The crisis began Thursday afternoon, May 21, 2026, around 3:30–3:40 p.m., when a 34,000-gallon tank containing methyl methacrylate (MMA) — a highly volatile, flammable, and toxic liquid used in manufacturing aerospace plastics and acrylic parts — overheated at the GKN Aerospace plant located at 12122 Western Avenue in Garden Grove. The tank began venting hazardous vapors into the air.
By Friday, the situation had escalated dramatically. Orange County Fire Authority officials reported they were unable to fully secure the damaged valves on the tank, which now holds an estimated 6,000–7,000 gallons of the remaining chemical. Division Chief Craig Covey described the dire scenario bluntly: “There are literally two options left remaining: one, the tank fails and spills a total of about six-to-seven thousand gallons of very bad chemicals into the parking lot… or two, the tank goes into a thermal runaway and blows up, affecting the tanks around them that have chemicals in them as well.”
Evacuation orders, initially issued for Garden Grove, were rapidly expanded Friday to cover portions of Cypress, Stanton, Anaheim, Buena Park, and Westminster — a roughly 9-square-mile zone affecting more than 40,000 residents. Schools in the affected areas were closed, roads blocked, and multiple shelters opened. Disneyland, located less than a mile away, was not under evacuation orders.
Crews have been aggressively cooling the tank with water curtains and have established containment barriers with sandbags to prevent any potential spill from reaching storm drains, creeks, or the ocean. As of early Saturday, officials said they have been able to maintain the tank’s temperature for now, buying critical time, and no injuries have been reported. Air quality in the area remains stable for the moment, though health officials warn that methyl methacrylate vapors can cause respiratory irritation, eye and skin burning, nausea, headaches, and dizziness if exposure increases.
GKN Aerospace, a major manufacturer of components for commercial and military aircraft (including engine parts, landing gear, and cockpit canopies), issued a statement emphasizing that “our priority remains the safety of our employees, responders, and the surrounding community.”
Garden Grove Mayor Stephanie Klopfenstein addressed residents directly: “We understand that this is frightening, but the evacuation orders are in place for your safety.”The incident has turned parts of the normally bustling area — home to one of the largest Vietnamese-American communities in the U.S. — into a virtual ghost town, with many residents fleeing with only minimal belongings. Local Vietnamese media outlets have been translating updates to ensure all community members receive timely information.
This remains a highly fluid and dangerous situation. Orange County Fire Authority, hazmat teams, and other agencies are working around the clock. Evacuation orders are still in effect as of Saturday morning, May 23, and officials have not yet provided a timeline for when residents might be allowed to return.
17GEN4 News will continue to monitor developments closely and provide updates as more information becomes available from fire officials and local authorities.
