Globe, Ariz. — A neighborhood in the City of Globe was evacuated Monday morning after an individual turned in several World War II-era hand grenades to the local police department, prompting precautionary measures from authorities.
City officials confirmed that the grenades were brought directly to the Globe Police Department, located near the intersection of Pine and Cedar streets. In response, evacuations were ordered for the surrounding area, and Pine Street was closed between Oak and Cedar streets.
"The evacuations and road closures are purely precautionary as experts work to assess whether the devices pose any danger," a statement from the city read. Officials emphasized that police and emergency teams are handling the situation carefully to ensure public safety.
The grenades, described as dating back to the World War II era, are commonly associated with the iconic Mk 2 "pineapple" fragmentation grenades used extensively by U.S. forces during the war. Such relics occasionally surface in communities, often inherited or discovered in old collections, and can remain unstable despite their age.
"We appreciate the community’s cooperation and patience as our police and emergency teams work swiftly and carefully to address this situation," the city added. Further updates are expected through official channels as the ordnance is evaluated and safely disposed of, if necessary.
No injuries have been reported, and authorities urged residents to avoid the area until the all-clear is given.
This incident serves as a reminder for the public: If old munitions or explosives are discovered, do not handle or transport them—contact local law enforcement immediately for professional assistance. 17GEN4.com
