WESTON, Fla. — Rafael Furcal, a three-time Major League Baseball All-Star and 2011 World Series champion, was arrested on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, in Broward County, Florida, facing two felony charges stemming from an incident that occurred on Monday. The 47-year-old former shortstop, known for his standout career with the Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers, and St. Louis Cardinals, turned himself in to authorities at the Broward County jail, according to court and arrest records.

Furcal, a resident of Weston, Florida, approximately 40 miles northwest of downtown Miami, is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and throwing a deadly missile into an occupied vehicle, dwelling, building, or aircraft. Details surrounding the incident remain limited, as the Broward County Sheriff’s Office has not yet released a full statement, and the investigation is ongoing. Court records indicate the charges relate to an event on Monday, but specifics, including the location and circumstances, have not been disclosed.

A native of the Dominican Republic, Furcal enjoyed a 14-year MLB career from 2000 to 2014, earning acclaim as the National League Rookie of the Year in 2000 with the Braves. He was a key player for Atlanta until 2005, later joining the Dodgers (2006–2011), Cardinals (2011–2012), and Miami Marlins (2014). Furcal’s career highlights include a .281 batting average, 113 home runs, and a World Series title with the Cardinals in 2011. His last MLB appearance was in 2014 with the Marlins, where he played nine games before retiring in 2015.

This is not Furcal’s first encounter with legal trouble. During his time with the Braves, he was arrested twice for driving under the influence, incidents that drew public attention. The current charges, however, are significantly more serious, carrying potential for substantial penalties if convicted.

Local news outlet WPLG Local 10 first reported Furcal’s arrest, with reporter Chris Gothner noting the former player’s surrender to police. National outlets, including the Daily Mail and Sporting News, have since covered the story, citing court records and local reports. The Associated Press, via AL.com, confirmed the charges and provided context on Furcal’s residence and baseball career. Despite the widespread coverage, authorities have urged the public to refrain from speculation as the investigation continues.

Furcal has not issued a public statement, and it remains unclear whether he has retained legal representation. The Broward County Sheriff’s Office has not indicated when additional details may be released. As the case develops, the baseball community and fans await further information about the allegations against one of the sport’s notable figures of the early 2000s.
