PHOENIX, AZ – A woman was shot and injured after allegedly breaking into a home near 43rd Avenue and McDowell Road in west Phoenix on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, according to the Phoenix Police Department. The incident, reported around 3:45 p.m., has prompted an ongoing investigation as authorities work to uncover the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Police say the homeowner, a woman, returned to her residence to find an unknown woman inside. In what authorities describe as a defensive response, the homeowner shot the intruder, who sustained injuries. The suspect was transported to a local hospital, though her condition has not been disclosed. The homeowner is cooperating with investigators, and no arrests have been made as of the latest reports.
Sgt. Maria Hernandez, a spokesperson for the Phoenix Police Department, stated, “Officers responded to a call of a shooting at a residence near 43rd Avenue and McDowell Road. Upon arrival, they found a woman with gunshot wounds. The investigation is in its early stages, and we are working to determine the events leading up to this incident.”
The scene remained active Wednesday evening as detectives canvassed the neighborhood for witnesses and surveillance footage. Authorities have not released the identities of the homeowner or the suspect, citing the ongoing investigation. It remains unclear whether the suspect was armed or what prompted her entry into the home.
This incident marks another violent event in the area, which has seen multiple shootings in recent years. In November 2024, a Drug Enforcement Administration operation near the same intersection resulted in a fatal shooting, and a triple shooting in October 2024 left one person dead. Community members expressed concern over the recurring violence, with local resident Javier Torres telling ABC15, “It’s getting scary around here. We need more answers about what’s happening.”
