Indianapolis, IN – May 28, 2025 – The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) has concluded its investigation into allegations that Chicago Sky player Angel Reese was subjected to racially charged “monkey chants” during a game against the Indiana Fever on May 17, 2025. The league announced today that the claims, which sparked widespread controversy, lack credible evidence and have been deemed unsubstantiated.

The allegations surfaced following a post on X by a user who claimed to have witnessed fans directing racially offensive noises at Reese during the game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The post, which gained significant traction before the account went private, prompted the WNBA to launch a formal inquiry. Reese and several teammates supported the claims, referencing a prior incident in which they alleged a man harassed them with racial slurs outside their hotel.

However, the WNBA’s investigation, which included interviews with players, officials, and fans in attendance, as well as a review of available audio and video footage, found no legitimate recordings or corroborating evidence of the alleged chants. “The league takes all allegations of discriminatory behavior seriously,” the WNBA said in a statement. “After a thorough investigation, we have determined that the claims of racially motivated chants during the May 17 game could not be substantiated.”

The controversy drew comparisons to a previous incident involving Reese, in which claims of racial harassment were also investigated but not verified by the league. Critics on social media platforms, including X, have labeled the recent allegations a “race hoax,” pointing to the lack of evidence and the rapid spread of the initial claim online. Supporters of Reese, however, argue that the absence of recorded evidence does not negate the possibility of isolated incidents in a crowded arena.

Reese, a standout rookie and former LSU star, has not commented directly on the investigation’s findings. Her performance on the court remains a focal point, with the Chicago Sky continuing their season amid heightened scrutiny.

The WNBA’s handling of the situation has sparked broader discussions about the challenges of addressing racism allegations in professional sports, particularly in environments where real-time verification is difficult. The league emphasized its commitment to fostering an inclusive environment and encouraged fans to report any concerning behavior to arena staff.
