March 07, 2025 – 9:57 AM EST - Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger has called on the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, to investigate potential government infiltration of the online encyclopedia he helped create over two decades ago. Sanger’s plea, made public in a recent statement, raises fresh questions about the neutrality and credibility of Wikipedia, a platform that millions rely on for information daily.

Sanger, who parted ways with Wikipedia in 2002, has long been a vocal critic of the site’s evolution, arguing it has strayed from its original mission of providing a neutral, crowd-sourced knowledge base. Now, he’s turning to DOGE—an initiative spearheaded by Musk and backed by President Donald Trump to streamline government operations—to dig into whether U.S. government actors have been covertly shaping Wikipedia’s content. “We need to know if federal employees are being paid to edit, monitor, or influence Wikipedia,” Sanger said, urging transparency. “If such operations exist, they should be defunded.”

The call comes amid growing scrutiny of Wikipedia’s editorial processes, with Sanger and others alleging that the platform has been co-opted by biased forces—potentially including government entities. Some cite Sanger’s past claims that U.S. intelligence agencies, like the CIA and FBI, have manipulated Wikipedia for years as part of broader “information warfare.” While these assertions remain unverified, they’ve fueled a narrative of distrust around the encyclopedia’s reliability.

Musk, a known skeptic of Wikipedia’s editorial integrity, has signaled receptiveness to Sanger’s request. The tech mogul, who once quipped about renaming the site “Dickipedia,” has previously criticized its perceived left-leaning tilt. With DOGE’s mandate to cut wasteful spending, an investigation into government-funded Wikipedia edits could align with its goals—if evidence of such activity surfaces.

Sanger’s history with Wikipedia adds weight to his appeal. In 2001, he proposed using a wiki format to accelerate content creation for Nupedia, a precursor project, laying the groundwork for Wikipedia’s launch alongside co-founder Jimmy Wales. But since his departure, Sanger has distanced himself from the site, famously declaring it “broken beyond repair” in 2007 due to what he sees as a lack of respect for expertise and neutrality.

Wikipedia has yet to respond to Sanger’s latest allegations. The Wikimedia Foundation, which oversees the platform, has historically dismissed claims of systemic bias or external manipulation as unfounded. However, Sanger’s push for a DOGE-led probe could force a reckoning, especially if Musk and Trump—who has also been tagged in Sanger’s outreach—take up the cause. 17GEN4.com
