What is a Tropical cyclone?

A tropical cyclone is a type of low-pressure system that forms over warm tropical waters and is characterized by strong winds, heavy rain, and thunderstorms. These storms are also known by different names in different regions of the world such as a hurricane in the Atlantic and Northeast Pacific, a typhoon in the Northwest Pacific, and a tropical cyclone in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean. Tropical cyclones are formed when a combination of warm sea-surface temperatures, moist air, and a preexisting weather disturbance come together to create an area of low pressure. As the low pressure system develops and intensifies, it begins to generate strong winds and heavy rain, which can lead to significant damage and loss of life.
