US Diesel Hits Record $6.50 as Iran, Ukraine Wars Squeeze Supply

U.S. retail diesel prices have climbed above $6.50 a gallon for the first time, according to data from the American Automobile Association, as wars in the Middle East and Eastern Europe tighten worldwide supplies of the fuel that powers trucks, farms and much of the economy.
The national average reached $6.505 as of Saturday, AAA reported. Prices have risen more than 87 cents so far in September, with increases occurring on nearly every day and pushing past the previous peak set in 2022. The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s latest weekly survey, covering the week of Sept. 14, put the on-highway average at $6.285, already a record and up 31.8 cents from the prior week and $2.546 from a year earlier. California remains the most expensive market, exceeding $8 a gallon in some readings.
The surge stems from overlapping disruptions. The U.S.-Iran conflict has curtailed shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint that normally carries a large share of global crude and refined products. Cargoes from the region have not fully recovered, limiting feedstock for refineries elsewhere. At the same time, Russia has banned most diesel exports and may extend the restriction, as Ukrainian drone strikes continue to hit its processing plants. A weekend attack on the Moscow Oil Refinery formed part of one of the largest overnight barrages of the year.
Diesel is often called the workhorse fuel because it powers freight trucks, agricultural equipment, construction machinery and generators. Higher pump prices quickly feed into shipping costs, grocery prices and inflation more broadly. Farmers have already reported pressure from record diesel bills during harvest season, compounding other cost increases. Analysts warn the rally could persist if conflicts continue to constrain exports from key producing regions.
The timing is politically sensitive. Midterm elections are approaching, and energy costs remain a prominent issue for voters. Inventories of diesel in the United States have run below recent averages even as refiners operate at high rates to capture strong margins. Wholesale prices and futures have also set records, signaling that retail costs may stay elevated in the near term.
