WASHINGTON, D.C. — A 21-year-old intern working for U.S. Representative Ron Estes (R-Kansas) was fatally shot in Northwest Washington, D.C., on July 2, 2025, in what authorities are investigating as a possible random act of violence. The victim, identified as a student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, was killed in a triple shooting that has left the capital city reeling.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department, the incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. in the 1700 block of P Street NW, near Dupont Circle, a bustling area known for its restaurants and nightlife. Police reports indicate that three individuals were shot, with the 21-year-old intern succumbing to injuries at the scene. The other two victims were transported to local hospitals, though their conditions remain undisclosed. No suspects have been named, and the motive for the shooting is still under investigation, with authorities exploring whether the attack was random or targeted.

Rep. Ron Estes released a statement on July 2 expressing profound grief over the loss of his intern, describing the young man as a dedicated and promising individual. “Our office is devastated by this senseless act of violence,” Estes said. “We are in contact with the intern’s family and are committed to supporting them during this unimaginable tragedy.” The congressman’s office has not released the victim’s name pending family notification but confirmed he was a student at UMass Amherst participating in a congressional internship program.

The University of Massachusetts Amherst issued a statement on July 3, confirming the student’s death and offering condolences. “We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of one of our students in this tragic incident,” the university said. “Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and the entire UMass community as we mourn this loss.” The university is providing counseling services to students and staff affected by the tragedy.
