Kyiv, Ukraine — June 1, 2025

In a dramatic escalation of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) has claimed responsibility for a large-scale drone attack on Russian air bases, allegedly destroying or damaging dozens of nuclear-capable strategic bombers. Ukrainian officials and sources have dubbed the operation “Russia’s Pearl Harbor,” drawing parallels to the surprise attack that marked a turning point in World War II. The strikes, which reportedly targeted bases housing Russia’s long-range aviation fleet, have intensified tensions in an already volatile conflict.

According to a source cited by The Kyiv Independent, Ukraine’s SBU deployed drones to strike multiple Russian airfields, hitting “more than 40 aircraft,” including Tu-95 nuclear-capable bombers, Tu-22M3 bombers, and A-50 early warning and control aircraft. “Enemy bombers are burning en masse,” the source stated, emphasizing the scale of the operation, which reportedly targeted bases in Russia’s Arctic and Siberian regions.

Ukrainian officials have hailed the attack as a significant blow to Russia’s strategic air capabilities. The operation, described as a meticulously planned drone assault, allegedly obliterated or severely damaged over 30% of Russia’s long-range nuclear-capable bomber fleet in a single day, according to claims circulating among Russian military bloggers and echoed by Ukrainian sources.

The term “Russia’s Pearl Harbor” has gained traction, reflecting the surprise and scale of the attack. However, these claims remain unverified by independent sources, and Russia has yet to officially confirm the extent of the damage. The Russian Defense Ministry has not issued a detailed response, though state media has downplayed the incident, calling it a “provocation” and vowing retaliation.

Analysts caution that while the reported destruction of such a significant portion of Russia’s strategic air fleet would be a major setback for Moscow, the lack of corroborated evidence makes the full impact unclear. The Tu-95 and Tu-22M3 bombers are critical components of Russia’s nuclear triad, capable of delivering both conventional and nuclear payloads over long distances. The loss of A-50 aircraft, vital for airborne early warning and control, would further complicate Russia’s military operations.

The international community has expressed alarm at the escalation. NATO and U.S. officials have not commented directly on their involvement, but X posts and unconfirmed reports suggest possible logistical or intelligence support from Western allies. These claims remain speculative and have not been substantiated by reputable outlets.

The attack comes amid a broader intensification of drone warfare in the conflict, with both sides increasingly relying on unmanned systems to strike deep behind enemy lines. Ukraine’s ability to target bases in remote regions of Russia highlights the evolving nature of the war and the growing sophistication of its drone technology.

As the situation develops, the world watches closely, with fears of retaliation and further escalation looming large. The true extent of the damage and its implications for the conflict remain uncertain, pending further verification from independent sources.
