NEW JERSEY – A fiery blaze aboard a New Jersey train triggered a chaotic emergency evacuation on Sunday, forcing passengers to flee for safety, authorities reported. The incident, which occurred shortly after 6:00 p.m., left thirteen passengers treated for smoke inhalation, with nine requiring hospitalization for further evaluation.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene after reports of heavy smoke and flames emanating from the train. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, but not before passengers scrambled to exit the train in a frantic bid to escape the choking smoke. Witnesses described a scene of panic as passengers, some coughing and disoriented, poured out of the train cars onto the platform.

"Everyone was trying to get out as fast as they could," said commuter Sarah Mitchell, 34, who was aboard the train. "The smoke was thick, and you could barely see. It was terrifying.

"Local authorities have yet to determine the cause of the fire, though investigators are examining potential mechanical failures or electrical issues. The train, operated by New Jersey Transit, was en route to a major hub when the incident occurred, disrupting service along the line for several hours.

The thirteen passengers treated for smoke inhalation were attended to by paramedics at the scene, with nine transported to nearby hospitals for further evaluation. None of the injuries were reported as life-threatening, though officials noted that the situation could have been far worse.

"We’re grateful for the swift response of our emergency teams and the cooperation of passengers during this frightening ordeal," said a spokesperson for New Jersey Transit. The agency has promised a full investigation into the incident and is working to restore normal service operations.

The fire comes amid growing concerns about the safety of aging rail infrastructure in the region. Commuters and advocacy groups have called for increased inspections and upgrades to prevent similar incidents in the future.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information or video footage of the incident to come forward. For now, the affected passengers are recovering, and the cause of the blaze remains under scrutiny.
