The House voted to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress for refusing to turn over audio recordings of President Joe Biden's interview with Special Counsel Robert Hur.
The contempt resolution passed with a vote of 220-211, with all Republicans voting in favor and all Democrats voting against.
The vote came after the House Judiciary Committee and the House Oversight Committee recommended holding Garland in contempt for defying congressional subpoenas related to the audio recording.
Democrats argued that the full transcript of the Biden interview has already been released to the public, and they warned that Republicans could manipulate the audio.
Republicans argued that the audio recordings are of "superior evidentiary value" and are necessary for their ongoing impeachment investigation into President Biden.
The contempt resolution will now be referred to the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia for potential criminal prosecution.
