  • The House voted to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress for refusing to turn over audio recordings of President Joe Biden's interview with Special Counsel Robert Hur.

  • The contempt resolution passed with a vote of 220-211, with all Republicans voting in favor and all Democrats voting against.

  • The vote came after the House Judiciary Committee and the House Oversight Committee recommended holding Garland in contempt for defying congressional subpoenas related to the audio recording.

  • Democrats argued that the full transcript of the Biden interview has already been released to the public, and they warned that Republicans could manipulate the audio.

  • Republicans argued that the audio recordings are of "superior evidentiary value" and are necessary for their ongoing impeachment investigation into President Biden.

  • The contempt resolution will now be referred to the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia for potential criminal prosecution.
