The FBI has placed its counterterrorism and counterintelligence teams on elevated alert across the United States, intensifying monitoring for potential terror cells amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The move, confirmed by a senior FBI official to Fox News on Saturday, comes in the wake of coordinated U.S.-Israel airstrikes targeting Iranian facilities. Officials cited concerns over possible retaliatory actions, including the activation of Iranian-linked sleeper cells or proxies that could attempt attacks on American soil.

FBI Director Kash Patel announced the heightened posture in a post on X Twitter, stating: "Last night, I instructed our Counterterrorism and intelligence teams to be on high alert and mobilize all assisting security assets needed. Our JTTFs throughout the country are working 24/7, as always, to address and disrupt any potential threats to the homeland."

Joint Terrorism Task Forces (JTTFs)—multi-agency units led by the FBI and operating in field offices nationwide—are actively engaged in surveillance, intelligence gathering, and threat disruption efforts. The bureau emphasized that no specific, credible threats have been publicly identified at this time, but the precautionary elevation reflects the fluid and high-risk environment following the military operations against Iran.

Security analysts and former officials have warned that Iran, facing what some describe as an existential crisis, could direct proxies such as Hezbollah or other aligned groups to strike U.S. interests abroad or domestically. Experts point to heightened "chatter" in intelligence channels and historical patterns where Tehran has used asymmetric tactics—including terrorism—to respond to perceived aggression.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), under Secretary Kristi Noem, is coordinating closely with federal intelligence agencies to monitor for any domestic spillover. While the National Terrorism Advisory System (NTAS) has not issued a new public bulletin, officials stressed vigilance remains paramount.

This alert underscores the FBI's ongoing priority to detect and neutralize threats from foreign terrorist organizations and their affiliates operating within U.S. borders. The bureau's National Security Branch, which oversees counterterrorism and counterintelligence divisions, continues to collaborate with partners at all levels of government to safeguard the homeland.

As U.S. operations against Iran persist and regional tensions rise, authorities urged the public to report any suspicious activity to local law enforcement or the FBI tip line. The duration of the elevated alert status has not been specified, with officials indicating it will remain in effect as long as the threat environment warrants.
