Texas Democrat Attacked by Giant Rat Near Chicago’s Iconic ‘Bean’

CHICAGO, IL – August 15, 2025 – A Texas Democratic lawmaker, part of a group that fled to Chicago to block a controversial redistricting vote in their home state, was reportedly assaulted by an unusually large rat while visiting the city’s famous Cloud Gate sculpture, colloquially known as “The Bean,” in Millennium Park. The bizarre incident has sparked a flurry of attention on social media and raised questions about the safety of Chicago’s urban wildlife.

The lawmaker, whose identity has not been officially disclosed, was among the Texas Democrats who arrived in Illinois to break a legislative quorum and stall a GOP-led effort to redraw Texas’ congressional map. According to eyewitnesses, the politician was taking a moment to admire the reflective, bean-shaped sculpture when the encounter occurred late Thursday evening. “It was like something out of a cartoon,” said Maria Gonzalez, a tourist from Ohio who witnessed the event. “This huge rat – I mean, it was the size of a small dog – just lunged at the person. They were just standing there, staring at The Bean, and next thing you know, they’re flailing and yelling as this rat scurries off.”

Chicago police responded to the scene around 9:45 p.m. after reports of a disturbance near the sculpture. Authorities confirmed that the individual sustained minor scratches but declined medical attention. No arrests were made, as the culprit was, in fact, a rodent. The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation has since been notified to investigate the presence of oversized rats in the area.

The incident comes at a time when Chicago’s urban rat population has drawn significant attention, with the infamous “Chicago Rat Hole” in Roscoe Village gaining viral fame earlier this year. Local officials have emphasized ongoing efforts to manage the city’s rodent problem, but the attack has fueled online speculation about whether the “giant rat” was a symbolic jab at the Texas Democrats’ political maneuver.

Social media platforms, particularly X, lit up with reactions, ranging from humorous memes to debates about Chicago’s rat population. One user posted, “Texas Dems came to Chicago to dodge a vote and got jumped by a rat instead. You can’t make this up.” Another quipped, “The Bean’s got more drama than the Texas legislature right now.”

The Texas Democrats’ presence in Chicago has already been a point of contention, with Governor Greg Abbott threatening felony charges and issuing arrest warrants for the lawmakers who fled to block the redistricting vote. Representative Jolanda Jones, one of the vocal quorum-breakers, dismissed Abbott’s threats in a viral clip, stating, “He’s making up some shit, okay? He has no legal mechanism.” While Jones was not confirmed as the victim of the rat attack, her outspoken defiance has kept the group in the spotlight.

Chicago Alderman Brendan Reilly issued a statement clarifying that no “man in the Bean” was involved, referencing a separate viral hoax, and urged visitors to remain vigilant in public spaces. Meanwhile, the Texas Democrats continue their stay in Illinois, holding press conferences with local support to protest the redistricting plan.

As the story of the rat assault spreads, it adds an unexpected twist to the ongoing political saga. For now, the Texas lawmaker is said to be unharmed but shaken, and Chicago’s “Bean” remains a magnet for both tourists and, apparently, audacious rodents.
