A Tempe mother and her 8th-grade son were detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Tuesday and transported to a federal immigration facility in Texas, according to U.S. Rep. Greg Stanton and a letter sent to families by the student’s school.

The incident has prompted changes to the school’s eighth-grade promotion ceremony and drawn sharp criticism from local lawmakers.

According to reports:

  • The mother signed her son out of Shamley School in the Tempe Elementary School District before the detention occurred.

  • ICE agents did not enter the school building.

  • The mother and son were detained near the school and taken to the Dilley Immigration Processing Center in Texas.

  • The family was reportedly scheduled to celebrate the student’s eighth-grade promotion but is now hundreds of miles away in federal custody.

Shamley School Principal Bronwyn Sternberg sent a letter to families confirming the incident happened on Tuesday and clarifying that agents never entered school grounds.

In response to the detention, the school has made changes to today’s eighth-grade promotion ceremony. Parents and guests will no longer be allowed in the audience, according to communications shared with families.

U.S. Rep. Greg Stanton (D-AZ) posted on X Wednesday, stating his office was aware of the detention and criticizing the timing:

“My office is aware that a Tempe parent and student were detained by ICE and are currently being transported to the Dilley Immigration Processing Center in Texas. They should be home celebrating their son’s eighth grade promotion — not in federal detention hundreds of miles away.”

Stanton has been vocal about the case, highlighting concerns over ICE enforcement actions affecting families and school communities.

As of Thursday, May 28, 2026, the mother and son remain in ICE custody at the Dilley facility in Texas. No public details have been released about the family’s immigration status or the specific reason for the detention. The case has sparked concern among parents in the Tempe school district and renewed debate over ICE operations near schools and the impact on children.
