SMYRNA, Ga. — A 17-year-old suspect, identified as Zaccur Garrett, was arrested on Saturday afternoon following a violent altercation at a Chipotle restaurant on South Cobb Drive in Cobb County, Georgia. The incident, which unfolded after Garrett was denied the restaurant’s Wi-Fi password, escalated into a series of criminal acts, including the brandishing of a stolen firearm, an assault on a police officer, and property damage, according to authorities.
Cobb County Police reported that Garrett became irate when Chipotle employees refused to provide him with the Wi-Fi password. “The suspect decided to escalate the situation and brandish a firearm and pointed it at employees,” said Officer Aaron Wilson in an interview with FOX 5 Atlanta. The gun, later recovered from a nearby trash can, was determined to have been stolen from Atlanta, police confirmed.
Following the confrontation, officers located Garrett across the street outside a hotel. Authorities say he discarded the weapon as police approached, likely aware of their imminent arrival. “This guy likely knew police were on the way and discarded it because he knew he wasn’t supposed to have it,” Officer Wilson told FOX 5 Atlanta. The firearm’s origins were traced back to a theft in Atlanta, adding to the severity of the charges against Garrett.
During his arrest, Garrett resisted officers, allegedly punching one of them while they adjusted his handcuffs. “The suspect swung at the officer, striking him, causing minor injuries,” Wilson stated, as reported by Yahoo News. This assault led to an additional charge of aggravated assault on a police officer. While being transported to jail, Garrett reportedly kicked and damaged a camera inside the patrol car, resulting in yet another charge of interference with government property.
Garrett now faces six charges in Cobb County, including aggravated assault on a police officer, interference with government property, and charges related to the firearm incident. Additionally, he has three outstanding warrants from another county for violent offenses, further complicating his legal situation. “He has several charges, including three outstanding warrants from another county for violent offenses,” police noted in a statement cited by FOX 5 Atlanta.
The incident has drawn attention to issues of youth violence and firearm access in the metro Atlanta area. Cobb County Police have not released further details about Garrett’s prior warrants or the specific nature of his outstanding charges, but the case underscores the challenges law enforcement faces in addressing such escalations.
