On Saturday, November 29, 2025, a mass shooting erupted at a toddler's 2nd birthday party held in a banquet hall on the 1900 block of Lucile Avenue in Stockton, California. The event, attended by over 100 family members and friends, turned deadly just before 6 p.m. local time as guests were preparing to cut the cake. Gunfire broke out inside the hall and spilled into the street, prompting chaos as attendees fled or sought cover. Authorities believe the attack was targeted, possibly gang-related, though this has not been officially confirmed, and it involved multiple shooters. Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi described it as an act of "group gang violence," while San Joaquin County Sheriff Patrick Withrow called the perpetrators "animals" for targeting children at a family gathering.
Casualties and Victim Details
Four people were killed in the shooting, including three children, making it one of the most heartbreaking incidents of its kind this year. Eleven others were wounded, with at least one remaining in critical condition as of December 3; several have been released from hospitals, and the rest are stable. The victims identified so far include:
Victim Name | Age | Details |
Maya Lupian | 8 | Described by her sister as "the most outgoing eight-year-old you’d ever meet." She was set to turn 9 later in December. A GoFundMe has been established for her family. |
Journey Rose Reotutar Guerrero | 9 | Shot in the head but initially survived; family details are emerging through community vigils. |
Amari Peterson | 14 | Killed while attending the party; his father, Patrick Peterson, recounted desperately trying to save him amid the gunfire. Amari's young sister was also grazed by a bullet but survived. |
Susano Archuleta | 21 | Shot in the neck and died at the scene. His brother, Emmanuel Lopez, noted his 9-year-old daughter was among the wounded but survived. |
Party host Patrice Williams, whose daughter turned 2 that day (and was unharmed), lost her sister, a cousin, and three friends in the attack. Roscoe Brown, a city violence prevention worker, reported that his niece and nephew were also shot. Vigils have been held across Stockton, with community members like Beatriz Vega, Ellein White, and Luz Guzman leading prayers for the families.
Investigation and Suspect Status
As of December 3, 2025, no arrests have been made, and the suspect(s) remain at large. A multi-agency manhunt is underway, with detectives developing suspect descriptions based on witness accounts and cellphone videos. Sheriff Withrow has urged the public to share any information, including "even rumors," and emphasized that the shooting was not random but aimed at a specific individual at the party. A $5,000 reward is being offered by the nonprofit Youth Peace & Justice Foundation for tips leading to arrests and convictions.
Separate arrests occurred Saturday night in Stockton's Civic District (about 7 miles from the scene), where five people (including a 16-year-old) were detained on weapons and gang charges after police recovered two firearms. However, authorities have not linked them to the birthday party shooting.Governor Gavin Newsom called the incident "horrific" and offered state support, noting the young ages of the victims in a statement on December 1. First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom described it as "devastating."
