SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — A suspect remains at large days after more than 40 shots were fired during a party at a short-term rental property in south Scottsdale, sending bullets into neighboring homes and rattling residents, according to police and local reports. No injuries were reported, but the incident has intensified the city’s ongoing efforts to curb the problem with short-term rentals.
Gunfire erupted just after 3:30 a.m. Sunday, October 11, 2026, at a rental near the 7300 block of Papago Drive, in the area of Roosevelt and 74th streets and near Scottsdale and McKellips roads. Neighbors reported hearing more than 40 shots in roughly 10 seconds. An audio recording captured the rapid barrage. About 25 people, many aged 16 to 22, fled the property as officers arrived. Police recovered shell casings in the street and found shots had been fired in the front yard, backyard, and street. Several nearby homes were struck, including one where a bullet hit inches above a window while a 5-month-old baby slept inside. Residents also reported police found drugs, alcohol, and firearms at the gathering. The Airbnb listing for the property was later taken down.
Neighbor Loree Heffron, a longtime resident, described the neighborhood as close-knit and called the situation “unacceptable,” noting the rental had become an “oasis” for parties with recurring noise and fights. Other residents expressed concern about bullets entering their homes.
Scottsdale police described the shooting as “extremely concerning.” As of the latest available reports from October 13, no suspects had been identified or arrested, though detectives were pursuing multiple leads and processing evidence. Police Chief Joe LeDuc stated: “We have a proven track record of identifying and arresting those who come into Scottsdale and commit violent crimes. We intend to make this case no different. When you bring violence into our community, we will commit the resources necessary to find you, arrest you, and hold you accountable.” The investigation remains active, with additional information to be released as it allows.
Scottsdale is stepping up enforcement through its multi-agency Short-Term Rental Team, involving police, the city attorney’s office, code enforcement, planning, and other departments. The city has highlighted existing tools to address nuisance properties, including the potential to seek license suspension via the courts in extreme cases. From January through August 2026, police responded to 665 calls for service at short-term rentals and filed hundreds of charges, many for noncompliance. Officials are also working with platforms like Airbnb and supporting legislative changes for greater local control. 17GEN4.com
