1 Dead, 1 Injured in Overnight Shooting Near Scottsdale Fashion Square; Suspect Charged with Murder
SCOTTSDALE, AZ — One person is dead and another remains in critical but improving condition after an early-morning shooting Sunday near Scottsdale Fashion Square and Old Town nightclubs, police said. A 22-year-old suspect has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident.
Scottsdale police responded around 1:15–1:25 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, to reports of gunfire near Scottsdale and Camelback roads, close to Saddlebag Trail. Officers said the shooting followed two separate physical fights outside different nightclubs in the entertainment district around 1 a.m. and 1:15 a.m. Police had already broken up the earlier altercations before shots were fired.
Two people were taken to a hospital with gunshot wounds. One victim later died. The second victim was listed in critical condition but appeared to be improving as of Sunday. Authorities have not publicly identified the victims.
Police arrested Jeremy La’Twan Campbell Jr., 22, after a short foot pursuit south of Camelback Road. Officers from the department’s bike unit used a Taser during the apprehension. Campbell was booked on charges of second-degree murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Investigators said he is the sole suspect in the shooting and they are not seeking additional suspects related to the gunfire. He was also taken to a hospital with unspecified injuries.
A handgun was recovered from a swimming pool at a nearby Best Western hotel on the south side of Camelback Road. Police said the weapon is being tested to determine whether it was used in the shooting. Camelback Road was temporarily closed between Buckboard Trail and Civic Center Plaza while detectives processed the scene. Officials stated there was no ongoing threat to the public.
A witness, Daevon Lanier, who was on a balcony at the nearby Estelle venue with his brother, said he initially thought the gunshots were firecrackers. “I’ve never experienced that, seen anything like that,” he told local media.
The investigation remained open as of Monday, Sept. 7. Police have asked anyone with information about the earlier fights or the shooting to come forward. 17GEN4.com
