Patiala, Punjab – August 26, 2025: A gruesome scene unfolded at Rajindra Hospital, one of Punjab’s largest public hospitals, when a stray dog was spotted carrying the severed head of an infant near Ward No. 4 around 5:30 PM on Tuesday. The shocking incident has sparked widespread outrage, prompting Punjab Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh to order an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the event.

According to hospital officials, the remains were recovered and sent for forensic examination to determine the origin and cause of death. The hospital’s Medical Superintendent, Dr. Vishal Chopra, stated that no newborns are unaccounted for at the facility. “All recent deliveries and child deaths have been properly documented, and bodies were handed over to families with complete formalities,” Dr. Chopra said, suggesting the remains may have been dumped outside the hospital premises by an unknown party.

Local police, under the direction of SP City Palwinder Singh Cheema, are investigating whether the infant’s remains originated from within the hospital or were abandoned externally. “We are probing all angles, and the remains have been sent for forensic analysis to ascertain the facts,” Cheema confirmed. The incident has exposed serious lapses in the hospital’s security and waste management systems. Eyewitnesses expressed dismay over the lack of measures to control stray dogs on the premises, with many alleging that poor sanitation and inadequate security have made Rajindra Hospital unsafe. “This is a wake-up call. How can such a thing happen in a major hospital?” said a local resident, echoing public sentiment.

Health Minister Dr. Singh assured the public that the state government is treating the matter with utmost seriousness. “We will ensure accountability once the investigation is complete,” he stated, emphasizing that the probe will explore all possible angles, including potential negligence or external foul play. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has called for swift action, urging both state and central governments to address systemic issues in public healthcare facilities. The incident has also reignited debates about stray animal control and hospital sanitation protocols across Punjab.

As the investigation continues, the public awaits answers to how such a tragedy occurred and what measures will be taken to prevent future incidents. The forensic report is expected to shed light on the infant’s identity and the circumstances leading to this horrific event.
