BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. — A routine search turned life-threatening for a female Berkeley County Sheriff’s Deputy when she collapsed after accidental exposure to fentanyl, newly released bodycam footage reveals. The incident, which occurred during a search of a suspect, underscores the growing dangers law enforcement officers face in handling unknown substances.
According to a report by WCSC, the female deputy was searching a woman when she discovered a clear plastic bag containing an unidentified substance in one side of the suspect’s bra and a folded dollar bill with another unknown substance in the other side. Moments after the discovery, the deputy suddenly collapsed, prompting immediate action from a fellow officer on the scene.
The bodycam footage captures the male deputy sprinting to a cruiser to retrieve Narcan, a life-saving nasal spray used to reverse opioid overdoses. He quickly administered the treatment to his colleague, who was then rushed to a nearby hospital. Authorities later confirmed the substances were fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid that can cause severe reactions, including respiratory failure, even in small amounts.
The deputy was treated and released from the hospital, with officials stating she is expected to make a full recovery. The swift response of her colleague has been credited with saving her life.
“This incident highlights the very real risks our deputies face every day,” said a Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson. “The quick thinking and training of our team made all the difference in this situation."
Fentanyl is up to 100 times more potent than morphine and has become a growing concern for law enforcement across the country. Accidental exposures during searches or arrests have led to increased calls for protective measures and training for officers.
The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office has not released the identities of the deputies involved or the suspect, and the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are urging the public to report any information related to illegal drug activity to help prevent similar incidents.
