8/1/2024 - A widely circulated bodycam video clip of the Sonya Massey shooting does not support the opinion that the officer was justified in using lethal force in self defense.
7/31/2024 - More information surrounding the death of Sonya Massey was released the same day Trump was spoke at the National Association of Black Journalists Convention in Chicago.
Prior to the shooting, 5 calls were placed to 911 between 7/4 and 7/6 believed to be from Sonya Massey and her mother.
"Sonya then admitted to breaking her own car window on the back driver side in an attempt to get into the car to get away," a neighbor told deputies according to a report.

Footage captured the night Massey died shows her greeting deputies at her front door, saying 'don't hurt me', and appearing confused.

July 6th, 2024 36-year-old Sonya Massey was shot and killed by Deputy Sean Grayson is Springfield, IL. Massey placed a 911 call after suspicion that someone was outside her home. Responding officers searched the property and did not find anyone. This Wikipedia entry says responding officers asked for Massey's driver's license and questioned her about a vehicle in her driveway. Grayson asked Massey to turn off the stove where a pot of water was boiling. While in the kitchen Massey said "I rebuke you in the name of Jesus," to Grayson who directed her to drop the pot. Shots followed, killing Massey.
Massey's family retained Ben Crump, a prominent civil rights attorney who has represented several other victims in high-profile instances involving police, including George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. The Justice Department is also investigating the case.
