The vigil was held at Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. High School in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, where Jackson and his two high school teammates, Isaiah Hazel and Anthony Lytton Jr., attended school. The shooting occurred in the school parking lot shortly after the vigil concluded.

According to reports, a man was shot in the chest and later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, while a woman was shot in the leg and taken to a local hospital. Both victims were in their 20s.
