PRESCOTT, Ariz. — Judge Pro Tempore Kristyne Schaaf-Olson, 42, has tendered her resignation following the release of explosive body camera footage capturing her in a compromising and intoxicated state. The incident, which unfolded in the early morning hours of October 4 near the county courthouse, has drawn widespread condemnation and calls for accountability from legal observers, with one officer bluntly declaring the scene "disgusting."

The drama began around 1:30 a.m. when multiple witnesses flagged down Prescott police officers patrolling the Courthouse Plaza area. According to a police report obtained by local media, Schaaf-Olson had apparently lost her balance after a night out, stumbling into a bush where she was spotted squatting with her pants down, relieving herself in full view of passersby.

Bodycam video, first aired by FOX 10 Phoenix, shows an officer approaching the disheveled judge, who was slurring her words and struggling to stand.

"What are you doing?" the officer asks. Schaaf-Olson mumbles incoherently, replying, "I'm waiting... Uber," before attempting to spell her name—a task she botches repeatedly.

The officer, clearly exasperated, radios a colleague: "She's useless. She can't even spell her own name." Witnesses, including the reporting officer, described seeing Schaaf-Olson not only urinate but also vomit and expose herself publicly, actions that prompted swift intervention.

Schaaf-Olson was cited on the spot for misdemeanor public urination and disorderly conduct, with a pre-trial conference now scheduled for next month.

Tensions boiled over moments later when Schaaf-Olson's husband, Jason Olson, 45, the parks and recreation manager for the nearby Town of Chino Valley, stormed into the fray. Footage shows him repeatedly ignoring officers' commands to "back off," instead reaching for his wife and attempting to pull her away from questioning.

"Come on," he urges, extending a hand as Schaaf-Olson weakly protests, "Stop." Officers, citing obstruction and resistance, swiftly detain Olson, cuffing him and booking him into Yavapai County Jail on suspicion of interfering with a police investigation.

He too faces misdemeanor charges, with his court date aligned alongside his wife's.Schaaf-Olson, appointed as Judge Pro Tempore just two years ago in October 2023, issued a somber statement announcing her immediate resignation on October 28, mere days after the footage surfaced.

"The Yavapai community deserves judges who are steadfast in their commitment to serving Yavapai County," she wrote. "Considering current events in my life, I believe it would be difficult to honor this commitment." Presiding Judge Scott Napper accepted the resignation, expressing appreciation for her service while noting the vacancy will be filled by appointment from the Arizona Supreme Court's Chief Justice, pending approval from the Yavapai County Board of Supervisors.

The scandal has ignited fierce debate in legal circles and beyond. Her attorney, in a statement to 12News, attributed the episode in part to "health issues," though details remain private.

Critics, however, point to the irony of a judicial officer flouting the very decorum she was sworn to uphold. "This is disgusting," one officer is heard muttering on the video, a sentiment echoed across social media and news outlets.

As the couple prepares to face the bench they once represented, the case serves as a stark reminder of the high standards demanded of those in robes—and the swift consequences when they're cast aside. The Prescott Police Department has not released further comment, but the full bodycam footage, available on multiple news platforms, continues to circulate, fueling public outrage and speculation about the night's preceding events. Yavapai County residents, many of whom viewed Schaaf-Olson as a rising star in the local judiciary, are left grappling with the fallout from what one local attorney called "a profoundly embarrassing lapse in judgment."
