Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir – June 2, 2025: Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir have initiated a large-scale cordon-and-search operation in the Kathua district following intelligence reports of three suspected terrorists in the region. The joint operation, involving the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and paramilitary forces, began late Sunday night and continued into Monday morning, aiming to neutralize potential threats in the area.
According to officials, the operation was triggered by local inputs received over the weekend, indicating the movement of three suspected terrorists in a forested area near the Saniyal region of Hiranagar, Kathua. Security personnel swiftly cordoned off the area and launched a comprehensive search to locate and apprehend the suspects. As of early Monday, no contact had been established with the suspected terrorists, and no casualties or engagements were reported, but the operation remains ongoing.
A senior official from the Jammu and Kashmir Police told PTI, "We received specific intelligence about the movement of three suspected terrorists in the forested region during the nights of Friday and Saturday. Security forces have been deployed, and the area is under a tight cordon to ensure the suspects cannot escape." The official added that search efforts have been intensified, with additional troops deployed to reinforce the operation.
The Indian Army, alongside the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and local police, is conducting the operation with precision to avoid collateral damage, officials said. Drones and other surveillance equipment are also being utilized to track the suspects' movements in the rugged terrain of Kathua, which borders Pakistan and has historically been a route for infiltration.
This search operation comes amid heightened security measures in Jammu and Kashmir following a series of recent terror-related incidents in the region. Just last week, security forces launched coordinated search operations in Kathua, Kishtwar, and Samba districts after reports of suspicious movements near border areas, as noted by Deccan Herald. The region has seen an uptick in anti-terror operations following the deadly Pahalgam attack on April 22, 2025, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians, mostly tourists, and was attributed to Pakistan-based terror groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed.
Residents of Kathua and nearby areas have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities. The operation underscores the ongoing efforts by security forces to dismantle terror networks and ensure safety in the union territory, which has been a focal point of cross-border tensions.
As the search continues, officials remain cautiously optimistic but have not released further details about the suspected terrorists or the progress of the operation. The situation is being closely monitored, with updates expected as the operation unfolds.
