CINCINNATI, Ohio — January 5, 2026
U.S. Secret Service agents swiftly detained an adult male early Monday morning after he allegedly smashed windows with a hammer and attempted to enter Vice President JD Vance's private residence in Cincinnati's East Walnut Hills neighborhood.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight at the $1.4 million property, a 2.3-acre home overlooking the Ohio River that Vance and his wife, Usha, purchased in 2018. The house was unoccupied at the time, with the Vance family already back in Washington, D.C., following a recent visit to Ohio, according to a spokesperson for the vice president.
Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi stated that agents heard a loud noise and discovered the suspect had broken a window while trying to gain entry. Sources familiar with the investigation told the Associated Press that the man also vandalized a Secret Service vehicle in the driveway.
The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was physically detained by Secret Service personnel and taken into custody by Cincinnati Police Department officers on local charges. Federal charges remain under consideration, with the agency coordinating with local authorities and the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Authorities are probing whether the incident was targeted at Vance or his family, though no motive has been publicly disclosed.
The property, described as a secondary residence for Vance, his wife, and their three children, showed visible damage to several windows in photos from the scene. Police and federal agents remained on site for hours processing evidence.
Vice President Vance, who served as Ohio's U.S. senator before assuming office in 2025, has not commented directly on the incident. His office referred all inquiries to the Secret Service.
The event underscores ongoing security concerns for high-profile officials, even at private homes protected by federal agents. No injuries were reported. The investigation continues.
