WASHINGTON — April 3, 2026

U.S. military officials confirmed Friday evening that one crew member from a downed F-15E Strike Eagle has been rescued, but a high-stakes search-and-rescue operation remains underway for a second American aviator still missing inside Iran.

The F-15E was shot down earlier Friday by Iranian air defenses, marking a significant escalation in the five-week-old conflict. The two-person crew ejected from the jet over hostile territory in southwestern Iran. U.S. special operations and aviation assets, including UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, raced into the area to locate and extract the airmen.

One crew member was successfully recovered by the helicopter team and is now receiving medical care. However, the second aviator — described by officials as the weapons systems officer — has not yet been located. Search efforts continue amid reports of ongoing Iranian activity in the region, including small-arms fire directed at rescue aircraft.

Pentagon and Central Command spokespeople described the operation as “active and fluid,” with President Trump briefed multiple times throughout the day by his national security team. Iranian state media, including Tasnim and Mehr agencies, broadcast images of alleged wreckage and an ejection seat while claiming the crew’s capture or a failed U.S. rescue. U.S. officials have not confirmed any captures and stated that one aviator is safe while the other’s status remains unknown.

Military analysts note this is the first confirmed manned U.S. combat loss in Iranian airspace since hostilities began. A second U.S. aircraft — an A-10 Warthog — was also struck in a related incident but its pilot ejected safely outside Iranian territory.

As night falls over the region, the Pentagon says every available asset is being used to bring the missing service member home. Families of the crew have been notified, and officials are withholding names pending further updates.

The incident comes just days after President Trump stated in a national address that Iranian air defenses had been “completely decimated.” U.S. forces continue combat operations in the broader theater while the search for the missing pilot presses on.
