Scottsdale Police Shoot Armed Woman in McKellips Station Lobby; Victim Remains in Critical ConditionSCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — May 5, 2026 — A woman is in critical condition and under protective custody after she was shot by a Scottsdale police officer inside the lobby of the McKellips Police Station on April 30, following a tense confrontation in which she allegedly pointed a handgun at multiple people, including officers and civilians.
According to the Scottsdale Police Department, the incident unfolded around 9:45 a.m. on Thursday, April 30, at the station located at 7601 E. McKellips Road (near McKellips and Miller roads). An adult woman entered the front lobby carrying a handgun. She first pointed the weapon at a station police aide, who immediately alerted other employees.
As officers responded, the woman then pointed the gun at another citizen who was in the lobby conducting routine police business. When responding officers entered the lobby and issued loud verbal commands for her to drop the weapon, she instead raised the gun toward them. One officer fired, striking the woman.
Officers immediately rendered first aid after she dropped the handgun and fell to the ground. She was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries, where she remains under protective custody as of the latest updates. No other citizens or police employees were injured.
Scottsdale police spokesperson Aaron Bolin described the rapid response: officers gave commands, but the woman pointed the gun directly at them, prompting the officer to neutralize the threat. The employees involved have been placed on temporary post-critical incident leave and offered peer support.
The McKellips station was closed through the weekend following the shooting. The incident remains under investigation by the Scottsdale Police Department and will likely involve an independent review, standard protocol for officer-involved shootings. The woman has not been publicly identified, and authorities have not released details about a possible motive or her background. If she survives, she is expected to face criminal charges.
No further updates on the victim’s condition or the investigation have been released as of May 5. Scottsdale PD continues to ask the public to avoid the area if needed and has emphasized that the quick actions of officers and staff prevented further harm.
