Recovery Operation Planned at Tempe Town Lake After Overnight Incident
TEMPE, AZ — Tempe Fire Medical Rescue and police launched a recovery operation Monday after witnesses reported a person went underwater at Tempe Town Lake early Labor Day morning and did not resurface.
First responders were called to the lake around 1 a.m. Monday, Sept. 7, near the Rural Road bridge. Witnesses told authorities they saw someone go under the water there. Police and fire crews searched the area before officials determined the effort had become a recovery rather than a rescue.
Tempe Fire said the dive operation to recover the body was scheduled to begin around 8 a.m. Monday. Fire officials did not release details about how the person entered the water or the person’s identity. The investigation remained ongoing.
Swimming is prohibited in Tempe Town Lake except during certain permitted events. The lake has seen multiple drownings in recent years.As of the latest available reports Monday, local outlets described the recovery as planned or expected that morning.
