PHOENIX, AZ — August 29, 2025 — The Phoenix Fire Department’s bomb squad was called to the Papago Park Military Reservation near 56th Street and McDowell Road on Thursday, August 28, 2025, after a vehicle threat prompted an evacuation of the facility, according to the Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs (DEMA). The incident began just before 4 p.m. when security staff at the reservation identified a potential threat involving a vehicle at the entrance.
The Phoenix Police Department responded, and the bomb squad investigated a possible fire-starting device found at the scene. No explosions or injuries were reported, and the response was described as precautionary by Phoenix Police spokesperson Sgt. Rob Scherer, who indicated there was no apparent criminal intent.
The driver of a red SUV, identified only as Jeff, told 12News that the device was a gift from his brother, calling the incident a “total misunderstanding.” Jeff was questioned at the scene, and no charges have been reported. Luke Air Force Base personnel were involved due to the nature of the device, and the immediate area around the reservation remained closed, though McDowell Road was reopened to traffic.
DEMA rerouted traffic in and out of the military facility and advised the public to avoid the area during the investigation. The response involved coordination between the Phoenix Police Department, Phoenix Fire Department, and military personnel, with no further threats identified.
No additional updates have been reported as of August 29, 2025, at 7:51 a.m. MST. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, and the public is encouraged to stay clear of the area until fully cleared by officials.
