17GEN4 News – Peoria, Ariz. May 9, 2026 — A woman is dead and a man remains in critical condition after a shooting outside a Safeway grocery store in north Peoria Friday morning, authorities confirmed.

Peoria police responded around 11:15 a.m. on May 8 to reports of a loud “pop” in the parking lot of the Safeway at Vistancia Boulevard and El Mirage Road in the Vistancia neighborhood. Officers located a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound to his upper torso. Peoria Fire-Medical crews rushed him to a local hospital, where he continues to be listed in critical condition as of Saturday morning.

The female suspect — described by police as a woman who knew the victim — was not at the scene when officers arrived. She fled in a vehicle. A short time later, she was located at a separate location and pronounced dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Detectives believe the two individuals knew each other, and domestic violence detectives were observed at the scene. Police have not released the names, ages, or further identifying information of either the victim or the suspect, citing the ongoing investigation. No motive has been publicly disclosed, though authorities describe the incident as isolated with “no threat to the community.”

As of the latest updates Saturday, May 9, the Peoria Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances that led to the shooting. There have been no additional updates on the victim’s condition beyond critical status, and no charges have been filed since the suspect is deceased.

Witnesses reported hearing only a single loud pop before the chaos unfolded in the busy shopping area. Police cruisers and investigators remained on scene into the afternoon Friday as they processed evidence, including a vehicle believed to be involved (described in some reports as an SUV possibly with a trailer attached).

This marks the latest high-profile shooting in the West Valley, though Peoria officials stress it appears unrelated to any broader crime trend.
