HICKORY, N.C. — A tragic mass shooting rocked a quiet community near Hickory, North Carolina, early Sunday morning, leaving one person dead and eleven others injured, according to the Catawba County Sheriff's Office. The incident occurred around 12:45 a.m. on June 1, 2025, at a residence hosting a party, which authorities believe was attended by high school students and others.

The Catawba County Sheriff's Office reported that deputies responded to a 911 call and discovered twelve victims with gunshot wounds. One individual was pronounced dead at the scene, ten others sustained serious injuries, and one person remains in critical condition, according to a statement from the sheriff's office. Major Aaron Turk, a spokesperson for the agency, noted during a press conference that the shooting appeared to be connected to the party, stating, "This does seem to be something that had some focus associated with that party." He added that there is no known ongoing danger to the community or the general public.

A local resident told WBTV, a Charlotte-based news station, that the gathering was a "pool party," with the shooting occurring primarily outside the home. The resident described the incident as appearing "random," a sentiment echoed by the typically quiet nature of the Walnut Acres subdivision, located approximately 55 miles northwest of Charlotte.

The Catawba County Sheriff's Office, in collaboration with the Hickory Police Department and special agents from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, is actively working to determine the motive and identify those responsible. No arrests have been made as of Sunday afternoon, and authorities are urging the public to come forward with any information related to the incident.

North Carolina Governor Josh Stein addressed the tragedy on social media, expressing condolences and calling for action to address gun violence. "Our hearts are with the victims, their families, and the Hickory community," Stein wrote, emphasizing the need for continued efforts to enhance public safety.

The identities of the victims have not been released pending notification of next of kin. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities combing through evidence and witness statements to piece together the events leading up to the shooting.
