3/7/2026 - On this day in 2026

3/7/2026 - On this day in:

  • 161 CE: Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius died, and Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus became joint emperors—the first time Rome was ruled by two emperors simultaneously. This marked an unusual power-sharing arrangement in the empire.

  • 1876: Alexander Graham Bell received a U.S. patent for the telephone, a groundbreaking invention that revolutionized global communication.

  • 1936: Adolf Hitler ordered German troops to march into the demilitarized Rhineland, violating the Treaty of Versailles and the Locarno Treaties. This bold move escalated tensions leading toward World War II, as it went largely unopposed by France and Britain.

  • 1962: The Battle of Pea Ridge (also known as the Battle of Elkhorn Tavern) took place during the American Civil War in Arkansas, a key Union victory that helped secure Missouri for the North.

  • 1965: Often called "Bloody Sunday", civil rights marchers attempting to walk from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, to demand voting rights were brutally attacked by state troopers and a sheriff's posse at the Edmund Pettus Bridge. The violence— involving tear gas, clubs, and beatings—was captured on national television, galvanizing public support for the civil rights movement and contributing directly to the passage of the Voting Rights Act later that year.

Other noteworthy events include:

  • 1774: Britain's King George III took steps to punish Boston colonists following the Boston Tea Party, including closing the port.

  • 1799: Napoleon Bonaparte captured Jaffa during his campaign in the Middle East.

  • 1945: U.S. forces captured the Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen, Germany, allowing Allied troops to cross the Rhine in World War II.
