• 1855: The first armed conflict of the Bleeding Kansas period occurred. Pro-slavery "Border Ruffians" from Missouri crossed into Kansas to influence the territorial election, clashing with anti-slavery settlers. This marked an early escalation in the violent prelude to the American Civil War over the issue of slavery in new territories.

• 1867: The United States purchased Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million, a deal known as "Seward's Folly" at the time. Negotiated by Secretary of State William Seward, it added 586,412 square miles to U.S. territory. Initially mocked, the purchase proved prescient with the later discovery of gold and oil.

• 1945: During World War II, Soviet forces entered Austria, capturing Vienna about two weeks later on April 13. This was part of the broader Vienna Offensive, pushing back German defenses as the war in Europe neared its end.

• 1981: John Hinckley Jr. shot President Ronald Reagan outside the Washington Hilton Hotel, wounding him and three others, including Press Secretary James Brady. Reagan survived the assassination attempt, and the event spurred debates on gun control and mental health policies.
