1046 - Pope Gregory VI was deposed by the Council of Sutri, leading to the appointment of Pope Clement II.


  • 1167 - King John of England was born, who would later sign the Magna Carta.

  • 1524 - Vasco da Gama, the famous Portuguese explorer who was the first to reach India by sea, linking Europe and Asia via the Cape of Good Hope, died.

  • 1814 - The Treaty of Ghent was signed, ending the War of 1812 between the United States and Great Britain. Notably, news of the treaty did not reach North America in time to prevent the Battle of New Orleans.

  • 1818 - "Silent Night" ("Stille Nacht"), one of the most famous Christmas carols, was first performed at St. Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf, Austria.

  • 1851 - The Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., burned, although most of Thomas Jefferson's collection was saved.

  • 1865 - Several Southern states ratified the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which abolished slavery.

  • 2004 - A massive earthquake off the coast of Sumatra leads to one of the deadliest tsunamis in history, affecting countries around the Indian Ocean.
