  • 1066: Edward the Confessor, King of England, died without an heir, leading to the Norman Conquest later that year.

  • 1477: Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, was killed during the Battle of Nancy, ending the independent existence of Burgundy.

  • 1531: Pope Clement VII issued a papal bull excommunicating King Henry VIII of England for his defiance of the Catholic Church by divorcing Catherine of Aragon.

  • 1757: Robert-François Damiens attempted to assassinate King Louis XV of France. He failed but was later brutally executed.

  • 1896: An Austrian newspaper, "Die Presse," published the first public display of the X-ray, discovered by Wilhelm Röntgen.

  • 1914: The Ford Motor Company announced an eight-hour workday and a minimum wage of $5 for a day's labor, significantly improving workers' conditions and setting a precedent for labor practices.

  • 1933: Construction of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco began.
