1066: Edward the Confessor, King of England, died without an heir, leading to the Norman Conquest later that year.
1477: Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, was killed during the Battle of Nancy, ending the independent existence of Burgundy.
1531: Pope Clement VII issued a papal bull excommunicating King Henry VIII of England for his defiance of the Catholic Church by divorcing Catherine of Aragon.
1757: Robert-François Damiens attempted to assassinate King Louis XV of France. He failed but was later brutally executed.
