  • 1554 - São Paulo, Brazil, was founded by the Portuguese Jesuit priest José de Anchieta. This day is still celebrated as São Paulo's anniversary.

  • 1755 - Moscow University was established by a decree from Empress Elizabeth of Russia. It's one of the oldest universities in Russia.

  • 1799 - Eli Whitney received a patent for the cotton gin, an invention that revolutionized the cotton industry by greatly speeding up the process of separating cotton fibers from their seeds but also significantly increased the demand for slave labor in the Southern United States.

  • 1858 - The Wedding March from Felix Mendelssohn's incidental music to Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" was first played at the wedding of Queen Victoria's daughter, Victoria, to Prince Frederick William of Prussia, popularizing the piece for weddings.

  • 1881 - Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell founded the Oriental Telephone Company in Japan.

  • 1915 - Alexander Graham Bell in New York called Thomas Watson in San Francisco, marking the first transcontinental telephone call.
