Authorities Probe Motive in Deadly Manhattan Shooting at NFL Headquarters
NEW YORK, NY — July 28, 2025 — Authorities are investigating whether Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old Las Vegas native, deliberately targeted the National Football League (NFL) offices during a deadly shooting rampage at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan on Monday evening. The attack, which left five people dead, including an NYPD officer, and at least six others injured, has raised questions about the gunman’s intentions and possible connection to the NFL.
Tamura, identified by law enforcement sources as the lone gunman, stormed the 44-story skyscraper around 6:30 p.m., armed with an AR-15-style rifle. The building, a prominent corporate hub, houses the NFL’s New York headquarters alongside major firms like Blackstone and KPMG.
Surveillance footage captured Tamura entering the building calmly before opening fire in the lobby, targeting employees and security personnel. The chaos unfolded across multiple floors, with the suspect ultimately found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the 33rd floor, according to NYPD investigators.
The investigation is now focused on whether Tamura’s actions were motivated by a specific grievance against the NFL. Unverified reports circulating online suggest Tamura was a former high school football standout from Granada Hills Charter in California, graduating in 2016, and may have harbored aspirations of playing professionally. Some speculate that a failure to achieve an NFL career could have fueled his actions, though authorities have not confirmed this as a motive. “We are exploring all possibilities, including whether the NFL offices were a deliberate target,” an NYPD spokesperson said, declining to elaborate further as the investigation remains ongoing.
Tamura, who held a valid Nevada concealed carry permit set to expire in 2027, killed an off-duty NYPD officer working security at the building, along with four civilians. At least six others were seriously injured, with emergency services warning that the victim count could rise. His vehicle, bearing Nevada license plates, was found parked near the scene, further confirming his identity.
Social media posts have fueled speculation about Tamura’s football background, with some users pointing to his high school highlights as a standout running back. However, no definitive link between Tamura and the NFL or other tenants in the building has been established. Federal and state authorities are reviewing his digital footprint and background for signs of planning or ideological motives.
The shooting caused widespread disruption, with Park Avenue and surrounding streets locked down during the evening rush. Witnesses described scenes of panic as employees fled the building under police direction. Mayor Eric Adams urged New Yorkers to avoid the area and expressed condolences to the victims’ families, calling the incident a “tragic loss for our city.”As the investigation continues, authorities are urging the public to refrain from spreading unverified information. The NYPD and FBI have yet to release an official statement on Tamura’s motive, emphasizing the need for a thorough examination of all evidence.
