JERUSALEM, October 13, 2025 — In a historic move, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has nominated former U.S. President Donald J. Trump for the Israel Prize, the nation’s highest civilian honor. The nomination, announced Monday, marks the first time a non-Israeli has been proposed for the prestigious award, reserved for those who have made exceptional contributions to the state or global society.

Netanyahu praised Trump as “the greatest friend the State of Israel has ever had in the White House,” highlighting his administration’s unwavering support for Israel. The prime minister pointed to key actions during Trump’s presidency, including the recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, the relocation of the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem, and the brokering of the Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel and several Arab nations.“

President Trump’s bold leadership reshaped the Middle East and strengthened Israel’s security and standing like never before,” Netanyahu said in a statement. “His contributions to peace and to the Jewish state are unparalleled, making him a worthy candidate for this honor.”

The Israel Prize, awarded annually since 1953, recognizes excellence in fields such as science, culture, and public service, as well as lifetime contributions to the nation. While the award has traditionally been bestowed upon Israeli citizens, Netanyahu’s nomination of Trump has sparked both admiration and debate. Supporters view it as a fitting tribute to a transformative ally, while critics argue the prize should remain exclusive to Israelis.

The nomination requires approval from the Israel Prize committee, a process that could take weeks. If selected, Trump would receive the award at a ceremony in Jerusalem on Israel’s Independence Day in 2026. Neither Trump nor his representatives have commented publicly on the nomination as of press time.

The announcement comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to expand the Abraham Accords and address regional tensions. Netanyahu’s decision is seen by analysts as both a gesture of gratitude and a strategic signal of Israel’s enduring alliance with influential global figures.
